MANILA — The spirit of the UERM family was on full display on August 29, 2026, as the inaugural UERM AFUSA Lecture Series brought together 122 attendees for an evening of learning, mentorship, and inspiration.
What began as a lecture on the U.S. Residency Application Process became something much more meaningful—a gathering that showcased the enduring bond between UERM alumni and the medical students and physicians who continue the tradition of excellence.
Leading the highly engaging session were distinguished UERM alumni Nanette Bernabe-Quion, MD ’88; Justin Quion, MD ’22; and Alyssa Bautista-Quion, MD ’22. Their comprehensive presentation on the U.S. residency application journey held the audience’s attention from beginning to end, offering practical knowledge, personal insights, and encouragement to those considering the challenging path toward residency training in the United States.
The session was moderated by Lee Reyes, MD ’94, UERM College of Medicine College Secretary, who guided the discussion with warmth and purpose. Dean Elmo Lago, MD ’84, was also present and shared words of wisdom and encouragement, reminding everyone of the values and ideals that continue to define the UERM community.
Representing UERM AFUSA were Luven Tejero, MD ’93, Chair of A.F.U.S.A. Mentorship Committee; Mel Aquino, MD ’85, Chair of the Board of Trustees; Ruby Reyes, MD ’78, AFUSA Secretary; and Board Trustee Emil Tayag, MD ’90.
Yet beyond the impressive turnout and wealth of information shared, perhaps the most inspiring part of the event was the sight of different generations of UERM physicians and students coming together.
For two hours, busy schedules were set aside. Alumni returned to share what they had learned. Students came with questions, aspirations, and dreams. Young physicians and seasoned practitioners connected across generations. It was a powerful reminder that while medical training may be demanding, no UERM student has to walk the journey alone.
The message from the alumni community was clear:
We are here for you.
UERM AFUSA seeks to assure the medical studentry that its alumni stand ready to provide guidance, mentorship, and encouragement through the rigors of medical school and beyond. From the classroom to residency applications and ultimately to the practice of medicine, the UERM family remains committed to helping future physicians find their path toward fulfilling the noble dream of becoming healers.
The inaugural lecture was therefore more than a successful educational event. It was a celebration of the UERM legacy—one generation reaching back to lift the next.
And the journey continues.

The second session of the UERM AFUSA Lecture Series will take place on October 3, 2026, featuring another esteemed UERM alumnus, Eliezer de Leon, MD ’73.
Dr. Eli will share valuable insights on test-taking strategies, equipping students with practical tools and perspectives to help them meet one of the many challenges of medical education.
The entire UERM community is invited.
As the AFUSA Lecture Series moves forward, it carries with it a simple but powerful message: UERM is more than a medical school—it is a family.
And when generations come together in the spirit of mentorship, service, and shared purpose, the legacy of UERM grows stronger.
